Lab Test Description

Prevent Heart Disease with Genomic Testing

According to the American Heart Journal, over 50 percent of people hospitalized for heart disease and stroke had "normal" cholesterol levels1. New lab tests can now look beyond standard cholesterol tests and not only give a profound insight into your current risk of heart disease, but also provide lifestylechanges you as an individual should make based on your genetic makeup.

The Heart Disease Prevention Test
Risk Factors for Heart Disease Beyond Cholesterol Levels

This test does include a standard cholesterol test, however, it also gives great detail into other risk factors for heart disease. Such factors include inflammation, cholesterol deposits in arteries, blood vessel dysfunction, and blood clotting.

  • Lipoprotein a: Type of cholesterol that, when elevated, can increase your risk of heart disease.
  • Homocysteine: Elevated levels of homocysteine may increase oxidative stress which is a major risk factor for heart disease.
  • C-Reactive Protein: Test for inflammation. High levels of CRP are associated with heart disease.
  • Fibrinogen: Promotes excess blood clotting seen in heart disease.
  • Cholesterol Size and Density: Several studies show that the density and size of cholesterol play a large role in the personal risk of heart disease. Our test uses the latest NMR technology to determine the size and density of your cholesterol.
  • PLAC® Test: Test for phospholipase A2 which is highly associated with plaque within arteries.

Genetic Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Your genetic makeup also greatly influences your risk for heart disease. Our comprehensive prevention test looks at your genetics to help gauge your risk of developing heart disease. Your test results also give you a report on what lifestyle changes you should make based on your genetic makeup.

Genetic Heart Markers

  • APOE 2, 3, or 4: This genetic test will help you make specific dietary changes based on your type of APOE.
  • Factor II: Test is used to help understand your body's blood clotting ability.
  • Factor V: Test is used to help understand your body's blood clotting ability.
  • MTHF: This gene determines how well you can process folic acid. Folic acid is needed to reduce homocysteine, a major factor in heart disease.
