Pernicious Anemia

Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition resulting in an immune attack against cells in the stomach that produce intrinsic factor, a protein needed for the absorption of vitamin B12. This leads to vitamin B12 deficiency which can lead to neurological concerns.

Symptoms may include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Impaired sense of smell
  • Loss of deep tendon reflexes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pallor
  • Personality or memory changes
  • Positive Babinski's sign
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore mouth
  • Tingling and numbness of hands and feet
  • Tongue problems
  • Unsteady gait, especially in the dark
  • Other neurological problems

If your CBC test shows elevated MCH and normal/elevated MCHC, consider testing intrinsic factor antibodiesmethylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels.
